The commodity Iridium Ore is required for the production of Duranium (4 Dura out of 12 ore) as well as for the working progress of a Research Center (2 Ore per round, from level 8). Also an "Industrial Replicator" (from level 7) can convert Iridium-Ore 1 : 1 alternatively to food or plasteel. Iridium ore can be attained by two ways.

Overview:
  1.   Digging ore in mines on Colonies

  2.   Ore-extraction in asteroidfields with ships equiped with mit "ore collectors"

1.   Digging ore in mines on mountain and stone fields.

Your workers can dig ore out of your mines. Therefor you first have to build a mine:

On different planet and asteroid types these normal mines have a variable productiveness: 4 | 6 | 8 | 12 Iridium-ore, in accordance to the particular "ore deposit" - see "Database" --> "Colony types" --> "Ore deposit". On different colony types a variable number of mines are required to supply a duranium factory which uses 12 ore every tick:

2.   Ore-extraction in asteroidfields with spaceships using "ore collectors"

The Button "Ore collectors" of a ore ship is only shown in the ship controls, if the ship is in a large or small asteroidfield, because in outer space there is no ore:

The extracted amount ore per used collector depends on the type of the asteroidfield and costs 1 energy each: in large asteroidfield 1 energy melts 6 ore, in a small asteroidfield only 3 ore. It's equal to collect ore in or outside the asteroid orbit. Ore-collectors can be used if the shields of the spaceships are activated. If the ship is docked, no ore collectors can be used.

Each collector use demands the phaser of the spaceship and heatens them for 1 unit, because the collectors have to melt the ore from the shifting asteroidpieces. If the fourfold maximum phaser-heating is reached, no more ore collectors can be send out in the current tick (round). In the next tickchange the phasers cools down about 4 units, so 4 ore collectors can be send out in the new tick.

A spaceship of the Antares-class, (each settler reaching level 4 can request two of them for free from the Federation (NPC), one every 10 ticks ), has for example amaximum phaser-heating of about 6, thus for ore-extraction multiplied by 4 = 24, it takes all in all 6 Ticks (6 x 4), for cooling the phasers completly. Or the Antares can send out 4 collectors every tick and extract 4 x 6 = 24 ore in a large asteroidfield.

Tipps:

With the 24 Iridium-ore, which can be extracted per tick out of a large asteroidfield, you can operate two duranium-factorys on the colony in the asteroidfield (consumption: 24 Ore, 12 Energy and 8 workers). Therefor the ore-ship has to be within the orbit of the asteroidfield and the ore has to be beamed down from colony, in order to restore the ships enery resources undisturbed. Naturally this can happen once in a while, for example once a day, but preferably not beyond these 6 ticks, the ship needs to cool down the phasers completly, because else the ore production fails to support the duranium-factories. 2 planetar mines on a large asteroidfield (24 ore, 6 energy, 8 workers) are not that effectiv as one ore-ship in orbit (24 Ore, 4 energy plus 0,5 to 2 energy for beaming down, 5 crew). But also regard the food and fuel consumption.

Especially in orbits of colonies in large asteroidfields it is worth to build a space station (for example a storage base). There the ore ships can dock to supply with food for crews and fuel like deuterium or plasma.(There are no ore ships with warpcore) The staion can also be used to beam down the ore to the colony - a storage bases provides enough storage for fuel and ore as well as a "100-beam-down" to colony. All available ore-ships can fire 5 torpedos per tick and store 10, the storage base can defend with 2 shoots per battle tick too. Because ore collectors can not be used if the ship is docked (aswell as bussard-collectors), the ships have to be undocked at least once in 6 ticks (once a day), in order to extract the maximum amount of ore. After docking again the space station can beam down the required amount ore to colony and then if necessary reactivate shields.

Only 3 ship classes are equiped with ore collectors:
Notification: There are no ore-ships with warpcore. Detailed information for settlerships can be found under "Database" --> "Shipclasses" - there click in the tiny ship pictures for further details. Purchasable ships (credits) are listed under "Preferences" --> "Exchange Credits" --> "Buy ships".
